Nicolas Rakotopare

Nicolas is a conservation filmmaker and photographer based in Queensland (Australia). Born in Madagascar, he started photography at the age of 14 and started his filmmaking path in the last decade. He has been in Australia for over a decade and after a degree in Ecology and Conservation biology he started to dedicate all his time to conservation storytelling a few years ago when the opportunity to do so arose. Over the years he has documented nature and conservation in a range of places including Borneo, Madagascar, Nepal, Indonesia and Reunion Island. His main work has focused on threatened species, the projects being done to study them and the people dedicating their life to them.

In the past few years, he has travelled across Australia with his cameras and documented the work undertaken by researchers, indigenous rangers and NGOs. By creating short documentaries and photo essays Nicolas hopes to use conservation storytelling to bridge the divide between often undocumented conservation science and the general public as well as showcase the incredible work undertaken by indigenous rangers across Australia.
