Having moved to the Western Cape of South Africa from a 34 year stint in Ecuador, my wife, Renee and I live within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve (KBR). It is a globally recognized biome, known as fynbos, where the flowering plant diversity is unique and extraordinarily high. Attached to the terrestrial section is a Marine Protected Area, also of great importance. I believe in concentrating ones conservation efforts close to home for maximum effect. Swapping focus from two other UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserves namely Galapagos and the Yasuni (in the Ecuadorian Amazon), where I lived in each for several years, to the KBR we are viewing the reserve from a holistic perspective. It needs all the help it can get right now and is very much in a general state of decline. Our photography is aimed at creating a sense of pride for the area, something we believe is the key first step in any conservation effort. The images, ©PeteOxford, are of a magnificent male chacma baboon from our local troop and a Two tone fingerfin from the MPA.
